Work-Life Balance

Work-Life Balance

There has been plenty written on this topic called work-life balance or work-life integration. I think we should look at it differently.

Technology has made this concept nearly impossible. Clients, candidates, bosses, family members, and friends all try to reach us at all times of the day. We jump every time the phone buzzes and feel this crazy urge to respond. When we are not connected, we feel like something is missing. We live in a very connected world and in some ways, this has made us disconnected from other aspects of our lives. It has made us very reactionary.

“Most of us spend too much time on what is urgent and not enough time on what is important.” —Stephen R. Covey

I believe what we are truly looking for is a work-life flow. How do you flow from one thing or task to the other, pay attention to everything around us, and not miss a beat or feel guilty or annoyed when we are interrupted from enjoying what we are doing?

I would say you do that by being present in whatever you do. I believe that is what we are all ultimately looking for. We want to be present when we are with our friends. We want to be present when we are with our family. We want to be present when we are at work. We want to be the best version of us.

I challenge all of you that for the next week, rather than trying to strive for balance, live in the moment. If you are with a friend, spend time with that friend. If you are with your family, spend time with your family. Pay attention to what they say, what they do, and give them 100% of your uninterrupted self. Of course, at work give J2 100% of you. Let me know how that feels.

Have a great weekend.

About Friday Food for Thought (FFfT)

I frequently attend conferences and retreats on entrepreneurship and leadership and while I am away, the J2 team picks up the slack, allowing me to learn to be better at what I do. I wanted to share what I was learning with my team, so I created the weekly FFfT emails in November of 2015 and have been writing them ever since.

Before long, the J2 staff began sharing the FFfT emails with their friends and family and now other leaders have asked to be included, which led to the creation of this newsletter. I hope you enjoy!
