Exponential Dreaming

I recently came back from a conference that was conducted by Singularity University and EO (Entrepreneurs Organization). The conference was about innovation, problem-solving and looking at things from a different perspective to solve problems that significantly impact our lives.  Coincidentally, I was also in the middle of reading “The Compound Effect” and found the concepts in both cases are amazingly similar.  The overarching theme of both was about moving the needle by leaps and bounds and not incrementally. I figured this was the universe talking to me.

Moore’s law is an observation that states that the number of transistors in circuit doubles about every two years, which means that every 2 years computer processing speeds double.  Here is the amazing part; given that rate by the year 2029 our cell phones will have the same processing speed as our brains and by 2031 they will process twice as fast as us.

In “The Compound Effect” there is a study in which people are offered $3 Million or a penny that doubles every day for 31 days.  On the surface the $3 Million seems like an obvious choice, but the reality is the penny doubling every day would total almost $11 million by the 31st day.

The concepts described above have profound affects in our lives if we can grasp them. I won’t lie, it is hard. The challenge is that we tend to think linear (1,2,3,4…) and not exponentially (1,2,4,8,16…). While it is difficult to think exponentially, what if we could? What would happen if you could dream bigger and think bigger?  What are the possibilities? Initially it will be slow going. Going from 1 to 2 to 4 may seem like slow progress but by day 10 you are at 512 and by day 20 at 524,288!

This weekend, I challenge you to test Moore’s Law and double your advances in a skill or a goal.  Your possibilities are exponential.

Walt Disney said “All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them.  Make them exponential.”

Have a great weekend.
