A friend and I recently discussed mind shifts and how the words we use can change our mood, mindset, and attitude. It was an interesting discussion. A few days later I saw a meme using the words “day 1” instead of “one day”. This was brilliant. One day implies you hope to do something when impediments to doing it are removed, whereas Day 1 means you are beginning the journey to accomplish the goal… whatever it is, you now have skin in the game. That slight shift in words is a call to action to make distant dreams something real and tangible, something we could begin. What a difference.
This small but powerful shift made me think about the other ways words influence our mindset. It’s incredible how something as simple as adjusting the words we use opens new perspectives and spurs us to action where we might otherwise hesitate.
I must admit that over time I’ve often said or thought ‘I wish I could do that,’ when admiring someone else’s accomplishments. It seemed innocent enough, almost like a way to honor their success. But ‘I wish’ was a phrase that kept me sitting on the sidelines, watching others move forward while I stayed in place. Wishing is like looking out at the horizon but never taking a step towards it. Then, one day, I decided to say, “I will do that.” It felt bold and scary. But that simple shift in words from wishing to willing—motivated me. Suddenly, those distant stars weren’t just for admiring; they were destinations, and I was on my way.
Another time, I caught myself grumbling, “I have to do this” about something mundane. The words felt heavy, like a sigh after a long day. What if I said, “I get to do this“? It sounds small, but it’s like flipping a light switch. Suddenly, the task wasn’t a burden but a gift, an opportunity that not everyone has. “I get to” reminds us to find joy every day and to see the privilege in things that once felt like obligations. Life is short, why wouldn’t we want to enjoy ourselves every day?
These changes in wording aren’t just linguistic tweaks; they’re reflections of a deeper shift in thinking. When we move from “if” to “when,” from “maybe” to “definitely,” we are changing our mindset and choosing to see the world—and ourselves—in a new light. We’re embracing certainty over doubt, action over inaction.
I’ve noticed that these small shifts can open entirely new worlds, helping us see challenges, not as roadblocks, but as steppingstones. They remind us that words matter and shape not just how we see the world, but how we see our place in it.
“The words you speak become the house you live in.” – Hafiz
So, the next time you catch yourself saying ‘one day,’ try switching it to ‘day 1.’ (Doesn’t it feel energizing just to say it?!) It could be the spark that ignites something much bigger. Every great journey begins with a single step—and often, that step is as simple as choosing the right words. What will your ‘day 1’ be? Share your story, and let’s inspire each other to turn distant dreams into reality.
Have a great weekend.
