But vs. And

But vs. And

One of the worst word in the English language is “but”.

Using the word “but” limits our power without us even knowing it. For example: “I want to do X, but it’s too Y.” The word “but” portrays a sense of doubt about your abilities and seeds negative thoughts. It inadvertently establishes excuses as to why something won’t work or is not doable.

“But” negates any positive message that was said before you or someone else uses it. “I like this because of all these wonderful things. Yes, but…”

“But” is limiting… to you and the person you are speaking to.

Eliminate “but” from your vocabulary, and enjoy a more positive outlook. Practice replacing “but” with “and”. By using “and”, you bring a positive aspect to the situation.

Have a great weekend.

About Friday Food for Thought (FFfT)

I frequently attend conferences and retreats on entrepreneurship and leadership and while I am away, the J2 team picks up the slack, allowing me to learn to be better at what I do. I wanted to share what I was learning with my team, so I created the weekly FFfT emails in November of 2015 and have been writing them ever since.

Before long, the J2 staff began sharing the FFfT emails with their friends and family and now other leaders have asked to be included, which led to the creation of this newsletter. I hope you enjoy!
