Relax to Perform

We are all so busy these days that it’s easy to forget the power of relaxation. Yet, being relaxed and refreshed helps us perform at our best in all aspects of our lives. When we take time to relax, we give ourselves a break from our problems and redirect our thinking to something else.  This, in turn, unlocks a state of mind that is focused, resilient, and confident.  Think about how often you’ve set aside a problem, taken a break, and returned to the problem with an instant solution!  It really works!

Years ago, I made it a personal goal to play at least 9 holes a week between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Like anything else, golf requires lots of practice, so I committed myself to improving my game.  This goal was for me, with no obligations or external pressures around it.  The good news is I met the goal and in doing so, improved my game.  I’m not saying I was a great golfer, but I was better! 😊   But there were challenges to meeting the goal. When I first started, I was stressed and had a million thoughts running through my head: “change your grip, widen your stance, don’t lift your head.”  This made me tense, and my performance suffered. By the end of the summer, something changed. The mechanics of my swing became second nature and as a result, I was much more relaxed on the course. The more relaxed I was the better my game. I played a few amazing rounds (by my standards), simply because I was calm and focused.

Today, I don’t get out to play as much and because of that, I’m back to overthinking my swing and following through again.  I’m reminding myself to adjust my stance, overanalyzing every shot, and of course, hitting the ball poorly. But even during those bad rounds, I’ve noticed that when I don’t overthink it and just relax, I strike the ball well. The lesson? Relax!

Relaxation helps quiet the mental noise, enabling us to concentrate fully on the task at hand. Whether you’re working on a critical project or simply trying to enjoy time with your family, a relaxed state of mind allows you to be fully present. This heightened focus not only improves the quality of your work but also helps you to complete tasks more efficiently.  You are better equipped to manage stress and recover from difficulties and will over time become more resilient.  Relaxation also breeds confidence, allowing you to trust your abilities and make decisive actions rather than succumbing to nerves or doubt. Whether it’s in a meeting, making a big decision, or simply managing daily responsibilities, being relaxed helps you perform better under pressure.

Relaxation is more than just a break from stress; it’s a powerful tool that enhances your focus, builds your resilience, and boosts your confidence. By integrating relaxation practices into your daily routine—whether through deep breathing, meditation, or simply taking a moment to pause—you can improve your performance in all areas of life.

Remember, true success comes not from constant activity but from the quality of your actions. And that quality is best achieved when you’re relaxed, calm, and focused. So, the next time you’re faced with a challenge, take a deep breath, relax, and watch how your performance improves. The power of relaxation is real—embrace it, and you might just be surprised at how much more you can accomplish.

“Your mind will answer most questions if you learn to relax and wait for the answer.” — William S. Burroughs
