As the last Monday in May approaches, many of us eagerly anticipate the long weekend, barbecues, beach outings, and quality time with loved ones. For me, Memorial Day has always been a time to gather with family and friends, enjoy the warmer weather, and celebrate the unofficial start of summer. But before I enjoy the festivities, I remind myself to pause and reflect on the true significance of this day—and the sacrifices so many have made to allow us all to enjoy our freedom.
Memorial Day is dedicated to honoring the brave men and women who have sacrificed their lives in service to our country. This tradition dates back to the post-Civil War era when it was known as Decoration Day. Communities across America would come together to decorate the graves of fallen soldiers with flowers, an act of respect and remembrance that gradually evolved into the Memorial Day we know today, recognized as a federal holiday since 1971.
Memorial Day gives us time to pause and remember the sacrifices made by countless service members and their families. It’s a day to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy and to acknowledge the price paid for these liberties. And at three 3 p.m. local time, our Nation pauses collectively for a moment of silence, a simple yet powerful act of remembrance and gratitude.
As you celebrate this Memorial Day, take a moment to honor the brave men and women who have given their lives for our freedom. Share a story, attend a local ceremony, or simply pause at 3 p.m. for a moment of silence. Let’s remember the true meaning of this day and ensure their sacrifices are never forgotten.
“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” – John F. Kennedy
Join us in commemorating our heroes and making Memorial Day a time of reflection, gratitude, and unity.
We wish you all a safe, peaceful, and relaxing Memorial Day weekend.
