The election is over, thank goodness! I think we can all agree that saying goodbye to the endless political ads, texts, and voicemails is a huge relief. Many of my friends and I felt the same way for weeks, maybe even months, just counting down the days until the politicking would finally end and our text and email volumes returned to normal.
But this isn’t about who won or lost this (or any) election; it’s about the election process in general. One thing that stood out to me during this election season was that my friends and I had some of the best conversations and debates over why our candidates were the best choice. Conversations were animated, perhaps sometimes hard, but always respectful. We each understood where the other was coming from, a place of wanting to inform and be informed. It was a refreshing reminder of how healthy dialogue can thrive and how we are all that much better for it, even amidst passionate disagreements.
This started me thinking about the bigger lessons in the election process, lessons we can take with us long after the campaign signs come down and candidates move on. Elections remind us of the critical importance of making informed decisions and remind us that we each have differing views…. but that is ok. We are all collectively stronger for it. In business, just like in elections, success often comes down to gathering the right information, evaluating options, considering other viewpoints, and making choices that shape the future of our companies. Whatever the decision, whether it’s hiring someone new, launching a project, or responding to market changes, doing homework and planning with foresight is key. It’s easy to get caught up in immediate tasks, but true progress comes from anticipating needs and planning accordingly instead of throwing darts into the future with the hope that they will hit the bullseye.
Resilience is another big takeaway from election season. Candidates face ups and downs, surprises, and even attacks, and they must keep moving forward no matter what comes their way. It’s a familiar scenario in business and life, where unexpected challenges and setbacks pop up all the time. How we respond to them, whether we adapt and keep going or let them knock us down—makes all the difference in our success. It may also change how we think about our failures, allowing us to learn from them rather than leaning into a reluctance to step out again. Elections are a strong reminder that resilience is crucial in any pursuit, giving us the ability to face obstacles with grit and flexibility. They teach us perspective.
Another takeaway? The art of listening. Successful candidates don’t just talk; they listen and ask questions to understand people’s needs and concerns. Listening with respect, especially to those we disagree with, is one of the most powerful things we do. Even if we’re not trying to win votes, being open to others’ perspectives helps us build trust and stronger relationships, opening doors to new insights and more meaningful connections.
Whether we’re facing decisions in business, challenges in relationships, or personal goals, embracing these lessons gives us the tools to navigate with purpose. When we make informed decisions, stay resilient through setbacks, listen with an open mind, and accept outcomes gracefully, we’re setting ourselves up for long-term success. So, let’s take these reminders from the campaign trail and use them to guide us in whatever comes next.
