Summer has “unofficially” arrived! Memorial Day weekend has long been considered the unofficial start of summer and with it comes gathering with family and friends over BBQ’s and an endless array of other fun summertime activities. Here, let me hold your beer while you flip those burgers! While we all love the fun, slower pace of summer and outdoor living, Memorial Day holds a very special place in the hearts of most Americans. It is a day to honor, reflect and remember the incredible men, women and their families who sacrificed to give us all the freedoms we enjoy, and many of them, making the ultimate sacrifice.
Memorial Day lets us all pause and join as a nation to celebrate the remarkable legacy these heroes have left behind, and the priceless gift they have given us all. That is the true significance of the day. We may visit cemeteries and memorials, bring with us flowers and wreaths to place on their graves; or we may simply take time to reflect on what they’ve given to all of us, and perhaps, whether we would each be brave enough to do the same. These gestures and reflections may seem small, but they carry immense meaning for all of us.
Memorial Day weekend also gives us an opportunity and time to gather with friends and family to enjoy activities together and to celebrate the amazing gift of freedom we have been given. I hope this long weekend you do just that, honor our fallen heroes, remember their sacrifice, and take time to celebrate with family and friends.
“As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” – John F. Kennedy
